Subject: FTP files are hanging sys
I'm not up totally on this ftp stuff and probably do some things
without realizing what I am doing or what it is called. I type ftp to
get to site. then type "binary" and then "recv filename".
problem was that when I transferred files to my hard drive from unix
files....(i think this was the problem) I didn't type "binary" again.
It went AScii to my HD. When I repeated the downloads again doing
"binary" in where I should, everything worked fine. This all done in
Telnet.

I recently upgraded to DOS 6 and am having a problem with EMM386. When
it's loaded, my floppy access slows down. If I type A: the A prompt
doesn't appear for about 20 seconds. If I REM out EMM from config,
floppy access is only 3 seconds. If tested the floppies with Checkit
and they're fine.
It's a strange situation. W/out calling Microsoft I haven't been able
to find a solution from anyone. If you can help please contact:

There's a file that interprets all domain names (such as de, au, es,
etc...). I think you'll be able to figure out where most everyone is
this way. You can find the file by ftp'ing to ftp.nisc.sri.com for the
file /pub/zone/iso-country-codes. There's also some other
Internet-related information files in that directory.
Good luck!

[I've received numerous messages to this fact... That'll teach me to
say something (write something) without checking more... I apologize
to everyone for the incorrect info... gph]
In INFO IBMPC issue #51, someone asked about determining locations for
FTP sites. Greg Hicks replied with the times for the "major" sites
mentioned in the list and suggested using trickle servers.
As may be pointed out by others, Greg got the times wrong for some of
the sites (mainly due to incorrectly identifying locations):
OAK.oakland.edu is located in Rochester, MI (Eastern Time, GMT+6, maybe
GMT+5 for Dailight Time now) not in California.
WUARCHIVE.wustl.edu is located in St. Louis, MO (Central Time
gmt+7/gmt+8) not in Washington State
I'm not real familiar with all of the services on the internet, but I
was able to look up the OAK location using the WHOIS service, which my
Delphi account has a menu choice for auto connecting (telnet) to. I
have retrieved stuff from WUARCHIVE enough to note the local time
difference (I was still in michigan at the time) and determine it's
location. I think that being familiar with some schools makes
decyphering domains easier.
As of April 4, most of the United States changed to Dailight Saving's
Time, which means adjusting GMT based times. This will be in effect
through Oct. 30. I don't have my world time schedule to look up the
correct gmt offsets.
Actually, using just the autoconnect interent services available from
my Delphi Account, in 5 minutes I was able to find out a little about
uncovering this information. In addition to the WHOIS service, I
telnetted to Michnet (MERIT) and used their netmailsites function for
additional information. If you would like the telnet addresses I used
for these services, send me a e-mail message (to my MCI Mail account,
it's check more often) and I'll get them to you. If there is enough
interest, I'll summarize to the list.

Subject: help wanted on faxmodem/answeringmachine
Hello IBMPC'ers,
I use a 386 PC with an internal Tornado fax/modem 2400/9600 Baud.
I also have a program called QLII (QuickLink II), which came with the
modem.
I also have a answeringmachine, which pickes up the phone after
two rings (not to be resetted at three or whatever !)
My question is : Can anybody tell me what to do to get both
working ??
My ideal-picture of it all is that my fax/modem first checkes if
any incoming call is a modem or a fax and if not the modem will pass
the call to the answering-machine (or am I dreaming too much now).
Is there software (share/free or commercial) available somewhere
which will handle this ? Or must I change some jumpers on my modem
card??
Hope to hear from someone of you soon !!
Best regards,
Marcel

Subject: Natural Connection 3.2.2 and 1.1 for Windows
I am having problems with version 3.2.2 and 1.1 (for windows) of
Natural Connection. NC is a terminal emulation software package that
we use at Wash. State University to connect to our mainframe running
Natural 2.1/2.2 operating system.
My problem: P.C. - Mainframe connection via a switch such as a Gandalf
switch whereby a modem or gandalf link periph is used. I am unable to
send a break either way to get the attention of the host. Also, in
down- loading from NC 3.2.2 in DBF (and possilby others) format, fields
are trunkated into each other where spaces are apparently open.
I wonder if anyone is familiar with Natural Connection and can
correspond with me to help solve some of these "trivial" problems.

Subject: Putting CD-ROM libraries onto the network
We are looking into what it would take to network our collection
of online resources that are on CD-ROMS (some of the collections are
InfoTrax, ABI Inform, PsycLit, etc -- probably a total of 30 or 40
CD-ROMS make up our collection including duplicates). Currently our
CD-ROMS are connected to stand-alone systems, but we want to make them
network available (via some sort of server).
I'm hoping that some of you have gone through this process and
might have some suggestions about software, hardware, and the gotchas
to avoid.
Our current thoughts are to install a Novell server with a bunch
of CD-ROM drives attached to a SCSI bus, and mount the CD-ROMS as
Novell drives. Though, we don't have any specifics.
But, we have several questions:
1) What server environments can handle this the best?
2) What hardware is out there to provide many CD-ROMS to the fewest
number of servers?
3) Has anyone had trouble with any of the CD-ROM libraries not being
network-able? Does a particular vendor not allow their data to be put
on the network? The software can't read a network'd CD-ROM?
4) What sort of licensing agreement are out there for networking
these libraries?
5) What sort of problems can we expect to have?
6) What software is out there to support this?
7) Does anyone provide access to their CD-ROMS from other clients
than PCs (like a VAX running VMS, a system running U*ix, remote telnet
access, gopher or WAIS)?
I'm sure there are more questions to be asked; so any comments,
suggestions, information or horror stories would be appreciated!
Please send any comments to me directly as I don't always read the
groups, and might miss your comments.

Subject: SCSI Drive with IDE
>I have a 386SX with a 80 MB Seagate SCSI HD. I was wondering if I can

I have just done this with a 386DX and a 40 MB SCSI HD. Based on my
experience ( :/( ) I would say that it's possible, but it ain't easy.
First, my IDE is also a Seagate. There might be problems if you use
another manufacturer's drive (or there might not be problems). My
ordeal dragged on three weeks; I think the solution was:
I had to change my SCSI controller card. The one that came in my
machine was just a barebones hd/fd controller. I purchased one (a
??3280A) that allows one to disable floppy control, select from a range
of BIOS load addresses, and control six other SCSI devices. (A SCSI
card controls eight devices, but the HD is one and the controller
itself is another). I had to use the device drivers that came with the
3280 board to control the SCSI HD. Soo -- I chose a different BIOS
load address from C800 for the SCSI since I couldn't change the IDE;
and I put device drivers in my CONFIG.SYS. BTW, you must disable the
floppy controller on one of the cards.
My boot sequence is: "normal stuff" from the BIOS, the SCSI controller
finds all the devices connected to itself, the IDE drive does its
thing, the device driver informs that SCSI is being installed as Drive
D. All is well.
Along the way, I also got an updated ROM BIOS from AMI, but I probably
didn't have to. If you need the manufacturer of the controller card,
or if you have any questions, just ask.

Subject: ST 225 Setups
Recently, someone asked about getting an 286 to recognize the Segate
ST225 hard drive he had installed in the computer. He said that using
an add in controller, the drive would give an invalid reading message,
while using the built in controller caused the computer to lock
completely.
Having recently worked with these types of drives in a 386 and running
into a similar problem, here are my suggestions. First of all, I'm
pretty sure you don't want to use the built in controller. Even though
you may believe it is a MFM (and works with the ST225), it may be an
IDE (AT) controller, which from my understanding of IDE drives, means
it is expecting controlling circuitry built into the drive.
As far as setting the drive in the CMOS setup, when using a MFM drive
with a separate controller card, it may be necessary to set the drive
table to "NONE" The MFM controller takes care of the logistics of the
drive.
Disclaimer: I don't claim to be an expert on installing hard drives.
If I have anything above wrong, please feel free to correct me in a non
flaming manner. The above is based on installation of 1 MFM hard drive
in a single computer and conclusions drawn from that experience.

Subject: MS-DOS 6.0 command.com env size patch?
Dear digest readers!
Does anybody know the patch address of command.com for MS-DOS 6.0 for
getting a larger environment size default?
[In your CONFIG.SYS file, put
SHELL=x:\yy\COMMAND.COM /e:ZZZZ /p
where
x is the Drive, typically C:
yy is the directory, typically DOS
and
zzzz is the desired size of the environment in bytes.
/p says make permanent (DON'T exit)
gph]
In DOS 5.0 the offset to patch was 1566h (1666h in debug). Changing the
default value of 10h (16 x 16 = 256 bytes) to 20h (512) or 40h (1k)
resolved the "Out of environment space" problem once for ever. I would
like to forget that problem for MS-DOS 6.0 as well.
Please don't tell me to put a shell statement in config.sys: it only
affects the primary command.com and not the child processes.
Please don't tell me to fill up the environment with nonsense
environment variables before starting a child process: it works, but
it's a mess!
Thank you very much for your help! andreas
